I hear you sister, you are in business to Thrive not merely survive? However just like a baby learns how to crawl before they walk and walk before they run, we need to learn how to survive in business before we can thrive. And that comes down to the systems we have in place

We are in business, the doors are open but we haven’t set up the right systems, we haven’t developed the right expectations… we are in waiting mode, waiting for that overnight success to appear. To be honestly that never too rarely happens. Jump in the drivers seat and work towards it..

6 Tips to Help you Survive in Business!

🎯 Get a Clear Picture of where you at right now!

Grab a pen and paper or open up a new spreadsheet, for this step you need to jot down where you are at right now in your business. In order to survive you need to know where you are starting. This is the most comforting part of being in business is identify where you are at right now.

  • Liabilities- How much money do you owe to who, what are the payments and frequency?
  • Expenses & Cost of Goods- List them out including amounts and when they are to be paid
  • Income- Look forward and see what work you already have booked in, put an estimate on what that is worth
  • Quotes & Follow-ups- Do you have any quotes or follow ups to do? What are they worth in $ value

From here you are going to be able to see if your head is above water or below. You can then also make moves reduce unnecessary expenses, follow up with your clients. This is something that should be completed monthly and reviewed weekly.

A Daily CashFlow helps you determine if you are on track to meet all our your committments & goals. This is where we map out all withdrawals coming out of your business each & every day of the month.

  • Spreadsheet- create a spreadsheet, on the top row you are going to put all the dates of the month and down the left side you are going to list all of your expenses and liabilities (every withdrawal that comes out of your bank account). Then insert the amount under the date of the direct debit. On the last row, create a sum that adds up the withdrawals for each day, ending with a grand total for the end of the month.

This will allow you to see each and every day how much you need to generate in income, it will also allow you to see if you are on track to meeting your obligations. You will feel in control of your business and also empowered to be able to make the decisions that need to be made- good and bad!

🎯 Know what’s available to you

This goes for all businesses, in any industry and regardless of the economic climate. Though when things are tough in the economy they governments usually make more grants and funding available to businesses. Some great places for you to find this information are

  • Your Accountant – A great Accountant will help you succeed and a bad one will kill you and your business in the blink of an eye. So don’t look for your cheapest option, look for the most capable and compatible.
  • Government Bodies- Such as taxation departments and local governments.
  • Industry Bodies- There are there to support businesses within their industries therefore they should be up with all current knowledge.

🎯 Communicate with your Team

There is no I in Team!
Have open lines of communication with your team, as in order for them to do their job to best of their ability they need to know what is expected of them and of the team at large.

  • Is it a particular $ of sales each day
  • To have a certain # of customers
  • Charge a certain # of hours

Sometimes the conversations are going to be tough but they need to happen. Both for you and for them.

In business the most flexible Wins
No I am not talking about being flexible with your values and your mission or even the level of service you provide. But I am talking about the way you deliver your products and services or maybe the types of products and services you offer. Being staunch or stuck in the mud is as good as putting a nail in the coffin

🎯 Be Proactive not Reactive

This goes without saying!
Proactive trumps Reactive why because we show up differently. Coming from a Reactive place we will often be angry or rude but being Proactive makes us feel like we are in control. Put moves in place that you and your future business will thank you for moving forward!

No one ever said being in business would be easy, and if they did you were lied too. But after being in business for the past 15 years, I can tell you that despite all the challenges and obstacles, it is worth every minute! Go forth and make it happen, set yourself up with systems that will help you Survive so then you can moving to Thriving Mode…
